Joostenberg Small Batch Collection Cinsault 2023 [Sample]
This Joostenberg Small Batch Collection Cinsault 2023 is fresh and perfectly bright...like adult cooldrink that I want to drink all summer long!

The Wine:
Initially serious herbaceous garrigue...which opens up into pronounced vanilla, red and blue berries (some fresh and some confected), and cinnamon as it warms up.
It reminded me of a lightweight Primitivo.
Medium bodied - lovely acidity and soft stemmy olive leaf-like tannins lend structure, ending with a medium finish. I found the vanilla a bit overpowering after a while...popping it into the fridge solved that almost immediately.
It’s a mixed berry bowl served with a generous dollop of vanilla ice cream - hella perfect for summer!
Vini + Viti:
Dry-farmed, bush vine Cinsault vineyard planted in 1997 on shallow, highly weathered granite on top of clay shale at the Klipdam Farm (next to Joostenberg Estate) in Paarl.
50% of the grapes are destemmed, with the rest wholebunch. Wild yeast fermentation occurs in open topped fermenters, with very gentle punch downs performed twice a day. The wine is matured in old seasoned 225L barrels for 10 months.
ALC 12.5 % | RS 1.0 g/L | TA 4.5 g/L | PH 3.62

Final thoughts:
Cinsault was once the dominant red planted on the Joostenberg farm. They have plans to plant their own Cinsault vineyards in the future.
