Migliarina Wines Chardonnay If I’d gotten aroun Migliarina Wines Chardonnay If I’d gotten around to a ‘best of the best’, summary for last year, this wine would have been front and centre. The current vintage is, undoubtedly, my most consumed Wine by the Glass in 2024. ABC says what now?!!! No notes, for obvious reasons (see the 2020 review in the pics). I didn’t venture out of the house much (‘twas the kind of year where a meteor falling on my head wouldn’t have been a surprise)...but I frequented a few of my favourite restaurants. Restaurants with curated wine lists worth exploring. And I’d get a secret thrill each time I spotted it. Okay fine, not so secret...I’ve squealed loudly enough for neighbouring tables to turn and look at me. To which I’d shrug and unapologetically declare ‘its Carsten’s wine’. People smiled and chuckled. The somms and waiters always smiled and eagerly engaged in raving about how lovely Carsten is...followed by more smiles and the mutual stoke when the wine was presented. Ps. I didn’t think I’d ever reach the point where I’d recycle photos...but this week has been an audio scramble (IYKYK)...and we WILL continue this Chardonnay series even if I don’t get a chance to run out and grab the bottle that I need for a pic. Pps. Super stoked to see how many people are raving about his Grenache. No repost required coz I’m staring at a little stash of the Grenache as I type!
Aslina Chardonnay 2022 Now that the Christmas tre Aslina Chardonnay 2022 Now that the Christmas tree is packed away and we’re (hopefully) done with all the festive wishes...how to start the new year? With the ABCs, of course! Winsome aromas of fresh lime-y citrus, ripe pineapples and just ripe apricots overlay more intriguing notes of jasmine, fynbos, lemon curd, burnt sugar crust of creme brûlée, toffee, butterscotch, nutmeg and smoke that lend density to the experience. Friendly acidity lifts the fuller body as a result of noticeable alcohol and ripe fruits. The flavours are similar to but far more pronounced than the nose...with chamomile joining the party for a sustained lengthy finish. Ntsiki Biyela needs no introduction. They’re solid, well made yet easy drinking wines that offer enough interest for wine connoisseurs whilst being accessible to general winelovers. Well worth adding a bottle to your shelf for everyday/anyday yum and feel good vibes!
Elemental Bob, Weisser Riesling, Cosmic Angle 2022 Elemental Bob, Weisser Riesling, Cosmic Angle 2022 Pronounced hay, honey, Granny smith apples, yeast, and grape must on the nose. Off dry?, high acidity, medium bodied with a slight creamy texture, and a long finish of green apples, flor, salinity, and toffee-like burnt sugar on the finish. Oef...if you told me this was a mislabeled Chenin I would believe you. The hay and apple...and the type of acid...a different acid to what I think of Riesling but not quite right for Chenin either. Divine with pork egg fried rice! As always, I relish any opportunity to admire the winemaking talents of Elemental Bob. I couldn’t make it through the year without dedicating a space to at least one of these wines (or the neighbour’s cat who’s fur is on everything in my life 😻). Craig is one of only two winemakers that I’d want to make my wine if I ever made wine...because he and his wines make me think...they resonate with me in a way that no other wine does. Two of my favourite things. I’ve raved about this winemaker and KitKat plenty over the years, so I’ll stop here...and wish you all a Happy New Year. May 2025 bring you happiness and success...may it be all that you wish for. May you be happy. (Shall we check in during the month of May in 2025? 😂)
In breaking news: I’m pleased to report that the In breaking news: I’m pleased to report that there have been improvements in Gingerlandia. This year sees great strides made in gender equality. Of course, our progressive society will always welcome those who prefer to embrace their naturalist beliefs. All are welcome in this here spice town. Regrettably, our citizens remain homeless, however positive rumors abound that 2025 may provide suitable accommodation for our gingery peoples. To end on a positive note: a thriving gold mine has been established and, despite reservations about the limited skills of their resident fashion designer, each of our citizens have embraced their newfound wealth by sporting solid gold buttons. In other news: BlankBottle Leaving The Table 2015 jingles with raspberries, dark cherries, vanilla, pepper, cloves, freshly dyed/cured leather, cedar, and a little bit of prune/plum. High acid, and medium tannins and finish. This slays/sleighs with its mouthwatering, juicy red fruits despite its age. To end this broadcast (and nip those awkward puns in the bud) : A very Merry Christmas to everyone who is celebrating. Happy Holidays to everyone. Now, more than ever, I wish you all peace and joy.
Hollóvár Pincészet Somló Hárslevelü 20 Hollóvár Pincészet Somló Hárslevelü 2013 Ahhh the annual ‘is it about the wine or the gingerbread’ post. Let’s just call this a naked teaser to next week’s momentous gingerbread update #cliffhanger coz this is most definitely about the wine! Tell me I’m not the only one who luxuriates in saying Hárslevelü but dreads typing the diacritics (double dot, accent)! A beautiful hazy medium yellow that I thought spoke to age...but, after some homework, seems to be a characteristic of the grape and the natural winemaking of Lajos Takács. Rich and pronounced aromas of pineapple, lemon and orange oil, honey (resinous propolis!), dried apricots, dried mango, quince, nectarines, salinity, some spices, and faint dried yeast. Dry with lively acidity, far fuller bodied than expected, slinky but with a teensy bit of grapefruit peel tongue-numbing zingy texture, and a lengthy finish. Hollow burnt sugar, subtle brandy wafts, slight oxidation, and herbals are at the forefront of the stone, tropical and citrus fruit. The salinity is most definitely still there...and it is glorious! Chamomile follows the grapefruit, leaving a weirdly refreshing feeling in your mouth. Only on day 4 did I notice a distant vanilla note on both the nose and palate. Needless to say, this was an absolute thrill...hence rationing myself over 4 days! This was a gift from honorary Hungarian (aka Polish) friend over our (almost) annual wine swop. It was the last wine made by Takács in Somló, the smallest wine region on Hungary. He now makes wine in Tokaj. But I’m just googling...you should follow @grzesiek.just.grzesiek for first hand knowledge about both regions...coz I’m 100% convinced his intel is 1000% better than Google! Thank you for this deliciousness, dear friend ❤️🙏🏾!
Tembela Syrah 2023 There’s something beautiful Tembela Syrah 2023 There’s something beautiful about the way Banele Vakele has honoured his mother in the name of this wine and the watercolour illustration on the label. The delicacy of the medium paints a wonderful contrast to the strength it depicts: the strength of African mothers, community, and the children that they raise. Smoke intertwines with olive leaves weighed down by black savoury fruit. The mild tar-like aromas of a brand new pair of leather gardening gloves, white pepper and cloves dominate the nose. The fruit, subsumed by herbal smoke and initially resistant to being documented, eventually reveal themselves as a palette of blackberries, black plums, and black cherries. Friendly acidity introduce the medium body and fine, but greener tannins that reinforce the olive leaf/fynbos grisaille. The decent length adds a diffusion of cacao and coffee. Again, the fruit seemed hidden at first. But that’s the thing with watercolours they’re not nearly as intense as vibrant acrylics or thick oils...however, with time (that dreaded patience that I don’t possess 😂), it reveals the careful and skillfully placed layers of a rather lovely painting. Mothers...right! One might think that I’m imagining a European countryside. Not a chance...find me a South African vineyard that doesn’t have at least one olive tree thriving in the heat. This Syrah is a study of South Africans braaing under the tree, smoke billowing as we glisten under the scant shade, and loving every minute of kuiering (visiting) in the sunshine...and the roar of cheers as the mothers eventually emerge from the kitchen carrying platters of salads that nobody actually wants to eat but everyone knows are good for you! Mothers...right!
