Wine Smart Pinotage Mixed Case [gifted] Pinotage Wine Smart Pinotage Mixed Case [gifted]

Pinotage turns 100 this year! So what a treat when @vinimarkwine sent this curated mixed case that explores the range of classic Pinotage styles. From Lanzerac established in 1692, and Kleine Zalze in 1695; to Delheim who’ve been farming for 7 decades; of course the legendary Beyerskloof who has achieved so much since 1988; to the mocha coffee chocolatey style of the Barista brand.

August is Women’s Month in South Africa...so I was especially delighted to spot HER Wine Collection, a brand I very much admire. For me, this cemented how much consideration went into this case.

My tasting notes are in the slides, but this wine has already evolved since the first vintage I’d tried a few years ago. And, I think it’s an excellent example of how Pinotage has, and still is, evolving...in terms of understanding the grape, the viti & vini techniques, and the potential of the wines. As well as the faces of SA winemaking and remembering to give back to our communities.

Vinimark offer 7 different mixed cases at Makro (via their July catalogue). They celebrate an array of quintessential SA wines grouped by their regions (Cape South Coast, Constantia/Durbanville, Robertson, Stellies, Swartland/Darling). Many thanks to @vinimarkwine for this opportunity to ‘Taste. Learn. Pair’ with Pinotage.
Vino pH Palomino 2022 We need a moment to fawn ov Vino pH Palomino 2022

We need a moment to fawn over Hanneke Kruger, one half of Vino pH who set out to make interesting wines together. You know when you meet someone and, between realising our names sound far too similar in a crowded room, you wonder ‘how can someone be soooo lovely?’. That’s Hanneke!

Pale gold with pronounced hay, straw, mealy apples, lemon peel, juicy grapefruit flesh, subtle cloves, salinity and baking soda minerality. Flint, smoke, kelp reduction blows off within 5 minutes.

Dry, low to moderate acidity, strangely still medium(-) bodied with some suuuubtle grapefruit pith texture, a watery texture, and a medium length finish. Grapefruit, cloves, green pears, and floury watery golden delicious apples (just ripe and still green) and salinity on the palate.

So yeah...this is Palomino. As much as there’s not much to the palate, it was still cool to think about why this grape works so well for Sherry, and about it’s history in SA.

I picked this wine because I have a soft spot for Palomino. But their Bukettraube Pet Nat (say what now...so yum too), Pinot, Barbera and Cab are all ridiculously easy to drink too. Hanneke and Paulette, the other half of this duo, absolutely make interesting wines that I want to keep drinking!

Ps. If you’re in Jozi next week, both Hanneke and Paulette and their respective wine brands (yes, there are more because there shall be no limit to how many interesting wines we need) will be pouring at the @winelab.joburg event. I can pretty much promise that you’ll also walk away thinking ‘how can someone be sooo lovely’! If I lived closer, I’d be attending for the awesome speakers and topics, great lineup of Swartland wines...and to giggle with Hanneke about our names sounding far too similar in a crowded room!
Maastricht Pinot Noir 2023 I finally visited this Maastricht Pinot Noir 2023

I finally visited this wine farm a few weekends ago with one of my fave wine study buddies/darling friend. We arrived ravenous...so the snack platter took precedence over any wine notes on the day. But I picked up a bottle of their Pinot to enjoy at home because I had a feeling.

The Pinotest Pinot colour...and a pretty, delicate nose of rose petals, ripe red cherries, raspberries and dried strawberries. Rooibos tea with milk, milky hot chocolate...there’s something lactic/dairy about this. A touch of vanilla, subtle cinnamon, Turkish delights, talcum powder, and ripe oranges in the background. All layered so delicately. It smells soooo good...I’d wear this as a scent or have it burning in a home diffuser any day.

Lighter bodied with fairly high acidity that provides structure alongside integrated light powdery tannins that sort of blend the edges of that structure in a harmonious manner. A decent length (medium-ish)...wish it was longer because the fresh citrus, red plums, and red berries are delightful. There’s an umami meatiness/mushroominess, and a bit of earthy clay that also feels seamlessly integrated. With a touch of green steminess on the very back palate.

In one sentence: Crunchy dehydrated strawbs, chewy dried cranberries, crispy rose petals, and of rosemary leaves enrobed in milk and white chocolate!

I like it a lot! This Pinot, their Contour SB, a deeelicious cheese and charcuterie platter with a side order of bitterballen, and my superb company equalled the perfect pairing.

Ps. This is one of the nicest winter tasting spaces...a calm, warm and toasty oasis laden with character in every corner of the tasting room barn: blue and white painted tiles, exposed roof structure, stone walls, spacious wooden tables, and friendly staff!
Clink Glass [gifted] TLDR: I love them. They’ve Clink Glass [gifted]

TLDR: I love them. They’ve become my daily drivers for casual, enjoyable drinking. They’re remarkably similar to Gabriels (slightly thicker and less precise). They’re cat proof, knock proof, and clumsy proof!

I remember a time where I was happy to drink wine out of a mug. Until I faced a dreaded tasting exam. Suddenly stemware became the most NB wine tool (I’d already failed 2 tastings exams). I tested every universal that I could get my hands on...and settled on my beloved Gabriel glasses( with stems). I passed with higher marks than expected.

But I love the comfort of stemless. They’d also become my IG flatlay staple. I didn’t feel like myself after breaking my last set...but couldn’t bring myself to invest in the Gabriel stemless’. So when @clink_glass offered to send me some glasses, I jumped at the chance to, at least, return to my flatlay faves. Turns out I also love drinking from these Bohemia Crystal Crystalex Sandra glasses.

Here’s what I’ve come to realise:

1. You just can’t run around with Zaltos...💸.
2. Riedel universals are fantastic; they hone in on the melody...the top notes...and then reveal the mid and bass notes. Melodies are wonderful...they’re what become ear worms that we can’t stop humming.
3. But I, personally, most enjoy the richness of arrangements and production...the driving drum beat, the staccato walking bass, the syncopated high hats...the texture of the timbre, the ebbs and swells that ‘fill’ the melody. And that’s what Gabriels give me first...followed by the fruit melody.

These Sandra’s put that same rich, depth of savoury, earthy, spicy experience ahead of the pretty fruits. More muted, but totally doable. I’ve tested them extensively - sparklings, bright white wines, funky skin contacts, heavily oakeds, rosés, light reds, dark broody reds, fortifieds...and even gluhwein. They don’t endorse warm gluhwein...but it goes to show that they are sturdy!

If you’re in the market for comfortably priced stemless glasses...these are solid. They’re also classy water glasses that match my beloved stems! @clink_glass offer a range of stemware at great prices...and I have my eye on the pretty coupes for cocktails!
Kir Yianni Xinomavro Sparkling Brut If you’re a Kir Yianni Xinomavro Sparkling Brut

If you’re anything like me, you quite enjoy fruity, friendly sparklings. And if you’re anything like my friends, you cannot accept a wine gift without reciprocating with a bottle of the sparkling Xinomavro that you served at a blind tasting. Despite this unfair blind choice, it was a delicious chance to taste a grape that I don’t know very well at all...and is probably the only other sparkling that I’ll share this year.

Pale straw with wonderfully friendly, if restrained, aromatics of orange blossoms, ripe oranges, sweet lemons, white peaches, pears, bruised apples, soft chewy toffee, salinity, dried coriander and savoury spices, and a muskiness that hearkens to pomegranate seeds but is probably something in the nettle family. It’s such an attractive nose...classy and friendly. Not demanding attention but also not hiding.

Dry in terms of sparklings, high acidity, light bodied with a little lemon pith texture, friendly fine creamy mousse that’s not overwhelming or underwhelming, mineral oyster shell and steely finish that could lean towards soapy, and a lengthy finish that’s probably medium (+)...and that pithy texture lingers in a friendly way.

Greek summer holiday, anyone?
Lunadora Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2016 Aka da Lunadora Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2016

Aka daydreaming about summer in Italy...but it’s too cold to touch the white wines and fully immerse yourself in the dream of an Italian summer?

Deep garnet with a medium(+) nose of dry cedar, freshly rolled tobacco, liquorice, stewed prunes, ripe black plums, red plums, soy sauce, teriyaki, stewed tomatoes, and a little VA lift.

Fuller bodied with firm powdery tannins, high acidity, and super savoury fresh tomatoes, sweet roasted tomatoes, a great balance of sweet and savoury spices, leather and salty dusty clay on the long finish.

I coravined this wanting to prolong the learning while still embracing Italy...thought it was meh so I opened the bottle the next day...it’s not meh at all!!! 🤦🏾‍♀️. You know what’s also not meh? It’s Friday! Happy weekend, everyone!
